Manchester University Phd. Chemistry graduates joined Lord Derby Academy for the afternoon and brought with them a series of demonstrations involving dry ice (carbon dioxide), oxygen, and liquid nitrogen.
As well as turning solids and liquids into gases, they also turned gases into liquids, and had lots of fun with balloons, bangs and bottle-rockets. The demonstrations grabbed the attention of pupils whilst also introducing them to issues of pressure, forces, and states of matter. All the time injecting plenty of excitement!
