Curriculum

The Modern Languages faculty at Lord Derby Academy believe that learning a foreign language provides a social, cultural and educational experience for our pupils. Not least among our aims is a desire to foster within our students a love of learning Languages and culture in both Spanish and French.

We encourage our pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to speakers, both in speech and in writing.

The curriculum is also designed to teach acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

In KS3, we encourage our pupils to learn two languages in order to enrich their quality of education and raise aspiration. During pupils’ option process in Year 9 we strive to encourage our dual linguists to continue to study both Spanish and French to GCSE.
